Schaffhausen
Situated on the Upper Rhine's right bank, the traffic-free Old Town of Schaffhausen is considered one of the prettiest in Switzerland, on account of its many oriel windows and lavishly painted facades from the Renaissance and Classical periods of its buildings. The lively Old Town is very good for shopping. Once a major depot, the town today still benefits from its central location and its place on the river. It is bordered by the Black Forest and Lake Constance, and surrounded by vineyards.

Old Town
The Old Town is dominated by the remains of the ramparts crowned by the Munot, a 16th Century Fortress, which provides for fine views over Schaffhausen. The Vordergasse is one of the most typical streets in the lower town with houses decorated with stucco. This is also where you will find the High Gothic St. Johann church with its remarkable acoustics. Note the "Zum Ritter" house that is decorated with some fine frescos. You can also see some pretty fountains on Fronwagplatz and the Government Palace with its 17th Century sculpted façade.

Rhinefalls
The Rhine is 150 meters wide at this spot, and falls from a height of 21 m. Its flow of 700m3/sec can reach 1,070 m 3/sec. The spectacle is worth a look, especially in July, during the high waters. There are viewpoints on either bank. These are the most powerful waterfalls in Europe.
