Lauterbrunnen
Lauterbrunnen is located in one of the most impressive trough valleys in the Alps between gigantic rock faces and mountain peaks. As many as 72 waterfalls and colourful meadows, the Lauterbrunnen valley is one of the biggest nature conservation areas in Switzerland.
Staubbach Falls
Almost 300 meters (1000 ft.) high, plunging down from an overhanging rock face, the Staubbach Falls are the highest free falling waterfalls in Europe. Just above Lauterbrunnen, it seems as if the falls just empty right into the village. The stream, on reaching the verge of the rocky walls of the valley, forms a cascade so high that it is almost lost in spray before it reaches the level of the valley.
Trümmelbach Falls
Located in the „Black Monk“ mountain between Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg, the Trümmelbach Falls are hidden behind mighty rock faces. The Trümmelbach alone drains the mighty glacier defiles of Eiger (3970 m), Mönch (4099 m) and Jungfrau (4158 m) and carries 20,200 tons of boulder detritus per year. The spectacle of 20‘000 liters of water per second cascading over the ten glacier-waterfalls can only be reached by tunnel lift in summer (beginning of April until beginning of November, daily from 9am until 5pm, in July and August from 8.30am until 6pm.
