Fiesch
The village Fiesch, on the sunny side of the Rhone valley, is located in the stepped Upper Goms valley, just at the entrance of the Fiescher valley. This Valais resort is the touristic and economic center of the valley and an ideal starting point for many excursions and hikes in the Aletsch region. In the old part of the village you can see the typical weathered houses of the Valais.
Aletsch Glacier
The longest Glacier in the Alps is the “Aletsch Glacier”, stretching approx.. 25 km (15 miles) from Mt Jungfrau to a plateau above the Rhone Valley. At its widest point the glacier is 2 km (1 mile) across. The Aletsch Glacier has been declared a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site. 23 km in length, a massive 27 billion tons of ice spread out over an area of approx. 100 square kilometers. A great view can be enjoyed from Mt Eggishorn that is reachable by gondola. Take the gondola from Fiesch to Fiescheralp, then change to another gondola that takes you to Eggishorn (2927m).
Winter
There is also plenty to do if you just like going for walks in the snow. The Aletsch plateau offers 72 kilometres of well-maintained winter hiking trails. If you like sledging, venture on the 13-kilometre-long toboggan run from Fiescheralp down to Lax in the valley and return to Fiesch by bus.
