Einsiedeln
Einsiedeln is located in the high valley of Sihl, close to Lake Sihl and the impressive Ybrig mountain range.
Countless pilgrims travel to Einsiedeln in order to view the remarkable 18th century baroque abbey complex. The Benedictine abbey has witnessed over a thousand years of history. Dating back to mediaeval times, Einsiedeln and its "Black Madonna" has been one of the most prominent pilgrim destinations of Europe.
Einsiedeln, which usually remains above the fog line, is a preferable local vacation and day tourist recreation area.
Einsiedeln Abbey
The Benedictine Abbey was originally constructed in Romanesque style and later Gothic. Reconstructed in 1704, the abbey got more space. The monks meet at the abbey church for daily service and the surroundings serve as living and working areas for the monks. The church is open daily from 06:00-20:30hrs (in summer until 21:00 hrs).
The Black Madonna was created by an unknown artist in the 15th century. This Einsiedeln Black Madonna belongs to a series of famous Black Madonnos in Europe.
The 1000-year old Abbey Library is an important part of the abbey. More than 1200 scripts, 1100 incunabulums and early prints as well as 230‘000 printed books belong to the library.
Ski Jumps
The four Einsiedeln ski jumps are used for competitions as well as trainings. These jumps are the only ones available for summer use in Switzerland. Take a tour (90 min) and get to know more about this fascinating sport which has a long tradition in Einsiedeln.
Sihlsee (Lake Sihl)
Built in 1937, this reservoir has a special charm. During summer, the lake is used for swimming, fishing and sailing and in winter for ice skating.
Christmas Market
At the end of November, the biggest Christmas Market in central Switzerland with more than 130 festively decorated Christmas stalls takes place.
Gingerbread Museum
Visit the Gingerbread Museum (at Kronenstrasse) and learn more about this Einsiedeln specialty. During shop opening times (13:30-16:30hrs) the visit is free-of-charge. A printed information (available in English as well) informs about the various items to see.
Summer
An extensive hiking network (400 km) and biking routes (250 km) invite for extensive strolls.
Winter
The ski region Mythen and HochYbrig offer endless winter activities to enjoy.
